Fall Reading Session Recap and Director Development Days preview

East side reading session

by Burke Lokey

On September 24, there were two Orchestra music Reading sessions presented by the MSBOA. The “East-Side” session was put together by Erin Little and hosted by Cathy DePentu at Plymouth-Canton High School. There was a great turn out of about 40 teachers and we read through over 50 new pieces in just a couple of hours. At the end of the session, the music was raffled off and each teacher was able to take home at least one piece of music. Some of the more popular titles were “This is Halloween”, “City of Steel”, and a very interesting “Urban Concerto Grosso”.

For those who could not make it to the East side of the state, there was another reading session in Grand Rapids that Joe Oprea hosted. There were about 15 teachers in attendance and they read through many titles as well. On the West-Side session (shown below), teachers also brought some of their favorite pieces to share with everyone.

MSBOA Director Development Days

MSBOA is pleased to present the third annual DDD conference on Friday, November 18 and Saturday, November 19. Registration is now open – all the information is on the MSBOA website.

MSBOA has worked hard to make sure there are good opportunities for Orchestra Directors at this great conference. The headliners include Lowell Graham, who is the Director of Orchestral Activities at the University of Texas at El Paso and also the Director of the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra. There will also be sessions by Bob Phillips, Johan deMeij,  and Robert W. Smith.

“I already go to MMC, my school won’t let me attend another conference.”

You can register for Saturday only if scheduling is an issue (for only $50!). Consider this a great networking opportunity and a chance to learn from some leaders of our craft.
