It is disturbing to think that teachers would have to make a choice between their own careers or that of their own peers. While some would say it was a small sacrifice, it certainly was not a small matter for the district's art, music and PE teachers who will soon face job elimination. We hope this will not set a precedent for other school districts as we realize the importance of arts education taught by certified professional teaching artists who are experts at their craft. We stand by our teachers in all subjects who continually strive to provide the best educational challenges to their students in an effort to educate the complete child.<br /><br /></div><div style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Michigan Youth Arts will join supporters from across the nation in Washington, DC this week for Arts Advocacy Day to ensure our legislators understand the importance of arts education taught by professional arts educators. We encourage you to do your part by writing to congress through the Americans for the Arts Action Center <a style="color: rgb(0, 153, 204); text-decoration: none;" track="on" shape="rect" href="http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=k48njqmab.0.bzuhgsmab.c8xo74bab.0&ts=S0895&p=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.votervoice.net%2FARTSUSA%2FCampaigns%2F29841%2FRespond" linktype="1" target="_blank">here</a> to strengthen access to learning in the arts so that the Lansing scenario is not repeated in other school districts.<br /><br /></div><div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">United, our voice will be amplified demonstrating the importance of the arts in order to prepare our students for the global economy of the 21st century. In order for Michigan as a state to entice new business and promote continued economic growth, it must have a robust workforce. It is essential that the curriculum in our schools equip students with the skills necessary to be creative and innovative. Entries should be no longer than 1,500 words and must be postmarked no later than Friday, April 12. The cash award for both age groups is $100 for 1st place and $50 for 2nd place, and there will be additional prizes awarded at the discretion of the judges.
