PLAN NOW TO ATTEND W-ASTA BIRCH BAY WORKSHOP
The annual W-ASTA Birch Bay String Teachers’ Workshop will
convene August 4-8 at Vista Middle School in Ferndale, Washington.
This 50th annual workshop will combine some special commemorative
features along with the traditional activities our members have come
to expect.
     Special offerings this summer includes:

         * Guest clinicians Robert Gardner and Roupen Shakarian will
present daily sessions on topics like integrating alternative styles,
rehearsal techniques, conducting technique, and more
         * A "Conductors’ Master Class" will offer critiqued podium
time for selected participants, using pre-assigned repertoire
         * The premiere of a new work for string orchestra by Richard
Meyer, commissioned by W-ASTA and dedicated to the Birch Bay String
Teachers’ Workshop

     PLUS:

         * Eight hours of reading new music and materials for school
orchestras, pre-selected to represent the best in all styles and grades
         * Technique/pedagogy classes on all instruments tailored to
meet the needs of participants
         * Opportunity to share successful techniques and ideas
         * Networking with colleagues
         * Optional social activities including the traditional
salmon BBQ on the beach and the annual string teachers’ campfire

Early registration is encouraged. You may download a
registration form by visiting www.stringspecialist.com/birchbay. Some
housing options are presented on the web page, also, along with
information about the workshop activities. Clock hours for teachers
(30) are available at no charge for WMEA members. University credit
is available (3 quarter hours) and may be purchased on-site.
This workshop is now the longest running comprehensive string
workshop in the United States and the only one west of the
Mississippi. We draw 60 or more participants from throughout the
country. Active, retired and pre-service teachers are welcome.
Although the workshop is oriented to school orchestra teachers,
private studio teachers will find sessions of value also.
