The MASTA String Camp, Session III is in need of an Orff Director, as
our usual teacher had an accident recently that is keeping her from
participating.
Qualifications: experience and willingness to teach large group
classes of students finishing 6-9th grade. Specific Orff training or
the use of percussion instruments are not necessary, but the ability
to get students moving and creating music (without their stringed
instruments) is critical. Undergraduate music degree required.
Classroom experience recommended. Masters degree preferred.
The camp is a week long session that has about 135 campers ranging in
age from just finishing 6th grade through just finishing 9th grade.
It's held at the Howell Conference and Nature Center. The campers play
in Orchestra, have daily sectionals, chamber music and what we call
"Orff" class.
The Orff Classes run for four 30 minute segments in the afternoon.
Each class has between 30-40 campers. The campers take part in rhythm/
movement exercises that develop their rhythmic and musical sense with
out playing their usual instruments. They develop a performance/
demonstration piece that they perform for their parents on the final
day of camp.
The classes are intended to be a fun, motivational musical experience
that helps kids with the internalization of rhythm. It also offers the
opportunity for kids to create music and learn more about how music is
structured, etc. We don't have any equipment (aside from a white
board- I think) so the Orff Director has always brought things with
them. Our last Orff directors would bring many forms of instruments,
from African drums to hand held instruments. There is no set
curriculum- the Director plans what he/she wants to do with the
knowledge that there's a performance/demonstration piece for the
parents on the final day.
The dates are June 27 (staff training starting at 1:00) through the
morning of July 4. The stipend offered is $500. You can choose to stay
on camp (room and board is provided if you decide to stay) or commute
if you live close by.
Address:
Howell Conference and Nature Center
1005 Triangle Lake Road
Howell, MI
There's a staff training session on the 27th that runs from about
1:00-5:00. Sunday is more training/planning and opening day (this day
is not strictly required of the Orff Director).
The Orff classes run from Monday-Friday from 12:55-3:10 p.m. The final
concert is at 9:30 Saturday morning. There are two 15 minute
presentations at 9:30 and another at 10:00.
The room/board is offered as part of being at the camp for the entire
week. The accommodations are very comfortable, especially for a camp
(air-conditioning, private baths, etc.). There are some traditional
Orff Director duties that take place two evening of the week- running
a square dance and a camp fire sing along. We can handle the camp fire
easily on our own and can make arrangements for the square dance if
necessary.

I am contacting several people, as camp is so close and will hire the
first qualified person that wants the position. Please respond if
interested quickly. :)
Thanks so much!
