Creativity Works!
As we begin our Arts Education Census at Michigan Youth Arts, I was pleased to connect with
my peers at the Arts Education Partnership conference this October. With great progress
being made in our field in research and dissemination of best practices, the conversations
are shifting their focus from panic to action in these turbulent times.

I heard from a panel about bridging the opportunity gap that highlighted achievements
in Colorado's creative industries and economy. The 2008 study of arts education
in Colorado Public Schools had a hand in those achievements.

Another session was on the skills map from the Partnership for 21st Century Skills. The
partnership was formed by the six leading
arts education professional organizations nationally, similar to the statewide partnership
that fuels Michigan Youth Arts. Their successes, and the tools they have provided
to inform educators and policy makers, are crucial in moving arts education forward
at the national level - much like our efforts here in the state.

It is always energizing to attend the Forums, connect with peers from throughout
the country, and come back with new ideas for moving arts education ahead in Michigan.
Together, we have the ability to speak with a collective voice, with clear data
to support our case, and position the arts as core in the lives and education of
all Michigan's children.

The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs Offers the 2011 Bus Grant Program
to Help K-12 Students Access Michigan Cultural Institutions

The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) is offering grants of
up to $500 to Michigan K-12 schools for the transportation cost of an arts and
culture-related field trip. The destination or performance must be chosen by the
school from a list of organizations affiliated with MCACA. This is the second year
of this program. In Fiscal Year 2010, MCACA funded 146 schools, benefitting more
than 17,000 students. The need for this funding is staggering. Last year's applications
revealed significant decreases or no field trip funding available in their districts,
coupled with increasing inability for parents to pay for these valuable experiences.
Cultural institutions have also seen their audience and visitor numbers drop substantially,
and research shows that the single largest factor in building adult audiences at cultural events
is exposure as a child.

This program is an attempt to stem this downward cycle and improve educational experiences.
An elementary music teacher wrote, "I can teach them songs, I can teach them the
beat and the notes and even how to play some instruments. I can play CDs of famous
symphonies and arias, and tell them about Bach and Beethoven. But what I cannot
do within the confines of my classroom is give them a true aesthetic experience
of a live performance of top notch musicians."

The application and list of organizations can be found at www.themedc.org/arts under
"Grant Program." Deadline to apply is January 15, 2011, for trips that take
place March 1, 2011, through May 30, 2011.

For more information contact Carolyn Damstra, Program Manager, damstrac at michigan.org,

The Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs serves to encourage, develop
and facilitate an enriched environment of artistic, creative and cultural activity
in Michigan. For more information on our initiatives and programs, visit www.themedc.org/arts.

Nominate Your School Board for the KCAAEN - NSBA Award

ArtServe is now accepting submissions for the KCAAEN and the National School Boards
Association (NSBA) Award.

Since 1998, the KCAAEN and the NSBA have provided an annual award to a school board(s)
that has demonstrated support for and commitment to high-quality arts education
in its school district, community, state or special jurisdiction. This national
award recognizes districts that have included all four major artistic disciplines
- visual arts, music, theater and dance in their programs.

The award competition program involves one school board per state that comprises
the maximum national pool of nominees. Final selection is made by a national panel
of arts educators and arts administrators including representatives of KCAAEN and
NSBA. The national Award is presented every year at the annual national conference
of the NSBA. The winning district receives a plaque presented at the National School
Boards Association Annual Conference, and a cash award of $10,000 to use for their
arts education programs.

ArtServe Michigan will convene a panel of its statewide arts education partners
and will select one nominee for Michigan to go forward to the national competition.

Deadline for Submissions: Materials must be submitted to ArtServe Michigan, Attn:
Mike Latvis, 1 Clover Court, Wixom, MI 48393 by Monday, November 29, 2010 at 5:00
