>From Feb. 22-23, 2013, Poetry Out Loud will host its Michigan state championship
at the Hannah Community Center in East Lansing. With more than 365,000 competitors
nationwide in 2012, Poetry Out Loud is the largest youth poetry recitation competition
in the country. All state champions from Michigan will be invited to the 2013 Michigan

DAFT Deadlines A4Submissions for the 2013
Michigan Student Film & Video Festival [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=9hh9bxoab.0.4pb6hieab.c8xo74bab.0&r=3&p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.daftonline.org%2Ffestival%2F]are due on March 1, 2013. Categories include: commercial/station ID, video/computer
graphics, public service announcements, sports documentary/event, music video,
artistic/experimental, animation, general entertainment, instructional, news/magazine
program and comedy. DAFT will select 6 "Best of Show" winners from the film festival
to participate in the Michigan Youth Arts Festival.
DAFT teacher recommendations are due March 3, 2013.

Stand Up for Arts Education A5Members of the legislature have introduced two pieces of legislation that would

Merit Curriculum's one credit requirement for the Visual, Performing and Applied
Arts needed to qualify for high school graduation by changing the definition of
applied arts and altering the credit requirement.

In an age of budget cuts, academic achievement ratings and rapid educational reform,
it's essential for teachers to know how to negotiate for themselves politically,

Education Association is hosting is annual Bargaining and Public Affairs Conference
at the Cobo Center in Detroit. This year's theme is "Advocacy Through Member Engagement,"
and the conference will feature numerous educational and informative sessions,

ASN Exemplary School Award Deadline: Feb. 15B4The Art Schools Network "Exemplary School" deadline is fast approaching! Make sure
to submit your online application on or before Feb. 15, 2013. This special designation
recognizes individual arts schools for excellence in their efforts to strategically
evaluate their purpose, operations and educational programs. The evaluation process
is based on the ASN/ACCPAS Guide to Assessing Your School, a document that assists
arts school personnel with important responsibilities for planning, evaluating and
implementing effective organizational development. Arts schools that have achieved
Exemplary School recognition will also gain positive exposure, which helps with
