Hi Nick,

Bryan Kolk gave me your email, as I am a member of MASTA and also the
director of Career Services and Music Entrepreneurship at the MSU College
of Music.

My program at MSU is bringing the innovative string quartet Brooklyn Rider
<http://brooklynrider.com>for a residency and concert on November
30-December on MSU’s campus in East Lansing. I wanted to make sure that
MASTA members were aware of the residency and concert, since we don’t often
have this caliber of string quartet here in Mid Michigan, and ask you to
share the information with the MASTA list serv as appropriate.

The quartet will be doing several masterclasses on November 30: a chamber
music masterclass from 1:30-3:30 in Cook Recital Hall, and a new student
composition reading in Cook from 7:30-9:30 PM.

The quartet will also be performing on December 1 at 7:30 PM at Fairchild
Theater at MSU.

Students and string teachers outside MSU are welcome to either residency
events or the December 1 concert. You can see the concert details and buy
tickets on the MSU Music website page for the concert
<http://www.music.msu.edu/event-listing/brooklyn-rider>, but I’ve also
attached it, below.

All the best,

Christine Beamer

Michigan State University College of Music is thrilled to welcome Brooklyn
Rider to campus for a guest artist concert on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in
Fairchild Theatre. A part of the MSUFCU Showcase Series, this genre-defying
string quartet, offers an eclectic, high-energy performance that will leave
the audience enthralled. The group is a premier chamber ensemble that makes
classical music accessible and celebrates its legacy.

Brooklyn Rider members – Johnny Gandelsman and Colin Jacobsen, violins,
Nicholas Cords, viola, and Michael Nicolas, cello – recently enjoyed their
10th anniversary as an ensemble. Hailed by Strings Magazine as “the future
of chamber music,” the creative quartet has performed in such varied
settings as Joe’s Pub in New York City, the San Francisco Jazz Festival,
Todai-ji Temple in Japan, the Library of Congress, and the South By
Southwest Festival. In addition, they have been featured on NPR, founded
the Stillwater Music Festival, and are active participants in Yo-Yo Ma’s
Silk Road Ensemble.

Works for the Dec. 1 concert include Quartet No. 3 “Mishima” by Philip
Glass, String Quartet No. 1 “Kreutzer” by Leos Janacek, “BTT” for String
Quartet by Colin Jacobsen, and Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Op. 95 by Ludwig
van Beethoven.
