Dear MASTA members,
Attached is a report developed by the Michigan Music Education Task
Force. I'd like to thank Dan Scott and Janis Peterson for representing
MASTA on the task force. I am also forwarding (below) a joint statement
on the importance of music education that was coordinated by Ryan Shaw
at MSU. I hope this report and statement are able to help you as you
plan for the fall with your administrators and other stakeholders.

“MI Safe Schools: Michigan’s 2020-2021 Return to School Roadmap” on June
30^th , 2020. The state’s roadmap requires and recommends certain
practices, and also asks public school districts to develop a local
plan. As districts engage in this planning, the state’s music education
associations are proud to release these guiding principles to help local
bodies plan for music instruction:
1)Concerts and rehearsals may not be practical in the fall, but make no
mistake: music education is more than large group performance. Content
standards in music involve performing solo or in small groups, creating
(i.e., composing/improvising) music, analyzing and evaluating music, and
making connections between music and culture/history.
2)As suggested in the Return to School Roadmap, elementary music
specialists can visit classrooms to provide instruction. If elementary
schools are online, music teachers have proven themselves ready to
deliver content via synchronous and asynchronous modalities.
3)Creative solutions for secondary music classes will require ingenuity,
but are absolutely possible. Districts should not cancel music classes,
but curricular and logistical modifications may be necessary. Splitting
up large classes or spacing out instruction during the school week in
music is one such modification. Secondary music educators also could use
flipped or other hybrid models for instruction.
4)While CDC guidance includes concern over aerosol expression from
singing, no CDC guidance suggests eliminating music courses.
THE BOTTOM LINE: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD MUSIC EDUCATORS OR MUSIC
PROGRAMS BE CUT IN FALL 2020 IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19 CONCERNS.
