Dear ASTA Members,

 This is Bob Phillips writing to say hi and happy new school year. I
realize how crazy it is getting the giant thing called your ‘string
program’ off the ground this time of year. My first day as orchestra
volunteer in Hudsonville was Tuesday. I got to teach cellos how to case and
uncase instruments. Yeah!

 I am writing to let you know about a fantastic opportunity for 8th through
12 grade string students on October 7th called the Great Lakes Music Youth
Academy. This is our 2nd year. Last year’s students raved about the
camp.  I will be teaching, and Pam will be administrating, this one-day
music camp to be held at Camp Blodgett near Grand Haven. The purpose is to
give students a one-day immersion experience in American Roots Music that
will include fiddling styles from the Bluegrass, Blues, Old-time, Irish,
and Scottish traditions. My co-teacher will be Nate Roberts who runs the
Michigan Academy of Folk Music in Holland. There are only 30 slots for
students due to space limitations. Could you help spread the word to your
wonderful students?

 A 3-minute video is available to show in your classes (
https://youtu.be/gdJpYD0ijTs) and a one-page information sheet is attached
to this email which can be printed or sent digitally. I hope you can show
the video, put a poster in your room, and hand out flyers. I would
appreciate it if you could take time to personally encourage 5 or more
students who you feel would be perfect for this opportunity.

 The Academy is part of the Great Lakes Music Camp which is mostly adult
focused. Some of the Camp faculty will be joining us for a one-hour
performance with an interactive conversation with students. This faculty is
comprised of some of the finest players in the world in their styles! The
day will culminate in an evening performance for parents and friends. It
will be an amazing experience for all.

 The camp is open to students that play violin, viola, cello, double bass,
guitar, mandolin, or banjo who:

·      Have a minimum of two years playing experience and are in grades
8-12.

·      Are able to function independently all day or have a guardian
present.
