Young Peoples Composition Contest

2007 Guidelines

About the contest:  The Lansing Symphony Orchestra is seeking original scores by local young composers ages 9 – 18.  The winning selection will be featured on the Symphony’s annual Young People’s Concerts on Wednesday March 21, 2007 at the Wharton Center and the Family Concert, the evening of Thursday, March 22, 2007 to be presented in Charlotte, Michigan.  This week of concerts is an opportunity where area school-aged children get to experience the Lansing Symphony Orchestra performing live.  Not only do students have a chance to hear a professional orchestra, but also get a chance to hear their peers perform selections in collaboration with the LSO.  The Young People’s Composition Contest will give these audiences a rare opportunity to experience an original piece of music composed by an area youngster.

Contest Eligibility Requirements:  The duration of the piece should be between 3 – 5 minutes in length.

Orchestration must include string orchestra at a minimum and may include full orchestra not to exceed the following instrumentation:  2 fl, 2 ob, 2 cl, 2 bn, 4 hn, 3 tpt, 3 tbn, 1 tba, timp, 3 percussion players, hp, str. 

Contestants must be ages 9 – 18 by March 21, 2007.

All scores along with a $20 non-refundable entrance fee must be received by the LSO by December 1st, 2006.  Please make the checks payable to:  Lansing Symphony Orchestra.  Recordings will not be accepted for judging.  The winner must supply parts for the entire orchestra before March 5, 2007.
