 Dear State Chapter Presidents,

The Merle J. Isaac Composition Contest is a program of the National Foundation to Promote String Teaching and Playing to encourage the composition, publication, and performance of music of quality for the benefit of school orchestra programs. This year, ASTA is offering junior and senior level competitions. Please encourage your members to visit http://www.astaweb.com/competitions/MerleIsaac.htm for complete guidelines, applications, and an opportunity to win a cash award and national recognition.

The junior division is open to student composers through the age of 18. Students are invited to submit an original, unpublished composition that is suitable for string orchestra at the elementary/middle or junior high school level.

The senior division is open to composers aged 19 and above. Composers are invited to submit an original, unpublished composition that is suitable for a full orchestra at the middle/junior high school or high school level.

PLEASE NOTE: For the 2007 competition only, junior level applicants may choose to compete in the senior division if they have composed a full orchestra piece. Please indicate for which competition you are applying.

Thank you for the time and talent you volunteer on behalf of ASTA, and we look forward to seeing you in Detroit this March!

Best regards,
