 Description

The St. Joseph Public Schools is looking for an enthusiastic
Orchestra director for a full time position working with three high school
orchestras and team teaching two middle school orchestras.

Applications and resumes are to be sent by April 26th to:

jrunser at sjschools.org

The St. Joseph Public School
Orchestra program includes three grade level orchestras at the middle school and
three orchestras at the high school, a 9-12 string orchestra, a 10-12 Symphony Strings Orchestra, and an advanced 20+ member Chamber Orchestra. Symphony Orchestra winds and percussion are
an extra schedule B assignment meeting one night per week. This full time assignment would involve
responsibility for the three high school orchestras, the Symphony Orchestra,
and team teaching with the Middle School Orchestra conductor for two hours per
day.

St Joseph High School enrolls slightly more than 1000
students and strings enrollment for the coming school year will be
approximately 130 members. Projected
enrollment at the middle school is approximately 730 students with 230 enrolled
in strings.

The St. Joseph Orchestras have received top ratings at
Michigan School Band and Orchestra Festivals for the past 28 years in a row,
and have performed five times at the Michigan Music Conference. Every four years the Orchestras plan a major
performance tour, which in the past has included two tours to Toronto, Montreal
and Quebec City, and two European tours in 1994 and in 2006. The first Europe tour included major cities
in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, and the second included concerts in
Florence and Venice, Italy, and Innsbruck and Salzburg, Austria. This June the Orchestra will tour New York
City, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C., and will perform at Lincoln Center and
Carnegie Hall in New York, and Schleisinger Hall and the National Presbyterian
Cathedral in Washington D.C.

Each year all orchestra students have the opportunity to
attend a performance of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and numerous clinicians
and professional musicians have given workshops and special performances with
the St. Joseph High School Orchestras. These have included professors of music from Western Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, the University of Michigan, Valpariaso University and Andrews University; Johnny Frigos, jazz
violin;  Randy Sabien, jazz violin;
the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra and faculty string quartet; Rachel Barton,
the Turtle Island String Quartet and three performances with BARRAGE. Through the support of an active parent
booster club, professional instructors on each string instrument are hired to
teach sectionals during the school day both at the high school and middle
school. Additional chamber group
coaching has been provided for the past seven years by the Fischoff Society
mentoring program in South Bend, Indiana.

Additionally, the National Association of Recording Arts and
Sciences has awarded the St. Joseph High School Music Department finalist
awards in the GRAMMY Signature Schools both in 2000 and in 2004, recognizing
St. Joseph High School as one of the top 100 schools in the nation for Fine
Arts programs.
