Sterling String Orchestra Conductor - Ann Arbor School for the Performing Arts
Permanent Part-time position
Job Description:
The job of conductor for the Sterling String Orchestra, a part of AA-SPA's larger Youth Orchestra Program, is a multi-faceted one. The successful candidate must be able to combine their passion for music with a seriousness of approach, while encouraging a light-hearted atmosphere that allows the orchestra to grow and change during the season.
The successful candidate will:
* conduct weekly rehearsals September through May and two performances (fall and spring).
* select appropriate orchestral repertoire.
* be available to participate in auditions.
* provide program notes for concert programs and occasional newsletter articles.
* maintain a strong working and professional relationship with the other principal conductors and administrators of the AA-SPA organization.
Qualifications:
* demonstrate excellent musicianship and artistry as a musician and educator.
* experienced conductor or group class teacher of literature meeting the needs of a range of predominantly middle school and upper elementary students.
* extensive stringed instrument background and/or conducting experience.
* demonstrate strong leadership skills; be punctual and organized.
* ability to effectively communicate with multiple constituent groups including general public, sectional coaches, students, parents and other Youth Orchestras conductors.
* possess an encouraging, inspiring and engaging demeanor while demanding a high standard of excellence of the members of the orchestra.
Anticipated Start date: September 9th, 2013
Compensation: Commensurate with skills and experience.

Organization : The mission of the Ann Arbor School for the Performing Arts is to to cultivate creativity, self-expression and the joy of music for people of all ages and backgrounds through collaborative musical adventures. Now in it’s 21st year, AA-SPA offers a wide variety of music educational programming ranging from orchestra to jazz studies to musical theater catering to children, youth and adults in Ann Arbor and the surrounding areas. The school is known for it’s outreach and scholarship programs that make these educational opportunities accessible to the under-resourced and at-risk youth. Application Process: Each candidate must submit a resume, three references and a 10-15 minute video of their conducting and/or group teaching. Final candidates will be invited to a conducting and standard interview process. A letter of intent, attn.
