Bus Grant Cycle Closes Friday, Jan. 25th
Michigan Youth Arts, on behalf of the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs,
is offering Michigan K-12 schools grants of up to $500 to pay for transportation
costs associated with an arts and culture-related field trip. We are accepting applications
from now until January 25, 2013. Schools may only apply once per school year. Therefore,
if your school has been approved for a grant, you may not apply again. This new
application is for schools who have not received a grant in the 2012-2013 school
year. The field trip for this cycle must take place between March 1, 2013 - May

MCTE Deadline: Monday, Feb. 4
High school English teachers who are members of the Michigan Council of Teachers
of English can submit their students' creative writing (poetry, fiction and drama)
for a chance to be featured in the 2013Michigan Youth Arts Festival. Selected students
will be invited to the Festival to participate in workshops with a guest author,
and award-winning pieces will be published in the Creative Writing book. Selected
works will also be published in the Festival program. The last day for submission
is Monday, February 4. Michigan Youth Arts Festival - Dance Adjudication on Feb. 3Dance Adjudication for
Michigan Youth Arts Festival will take place on Sunday, February 3 at the Flint
Institute of Music. Sponsored by the Michigan Dance Council, the Dance & Choreography
component of Michigan Youth Arts is structured to provide gifted dance students
with unique and challenging workshops, classes, and performances during the Festival.
All attendees must have registered on or before Friday, December 7th to participate
in the adjudication process.

Chelsea Center Opens New Visual Arts Room
Upon the completion of a recent building renovation, the Chelsea Center for the
Arts has opened a new visual art classroom in what was formerly the original garage
structure. As a large space with brand new heating, cooling, insulation, plumbing,
electrical, lighting, doors, windows, and surfaces, the new room will be used for
art classes involving large equipment, such as jewelry/metals, ceramics and sculpture.
Known for its visual art and music programs, exhibitions, performances and special
events, the center provides the Chelsea-area community with a rich arts experience.

The January Series of Calvin College: Jan. 3 - 23
Each year, Calvin College puts on The January Series, an award-winning noontime
lecture series that takes place in the 1000-seat Covenant Fine Art Center Auditorium
in Grand Rapids. During this incredible fifteen-day event, speakers deliver thought-provoking,
educational and entertaining lectures. The event is free and open to the public,
and the lectures will be live streamed from 12:30-1:30 p.m. For more information

Mid-Michigan Band and Orchestra Day
On Thursday, January 10, the Flint School of Performing Arts will welcome band and
orchestra students from 15 different high schools to join the Flint Youth Wind Ensemble
and the Flint Youth Symphony Orchestra. The collaboration takes place during Mid-Michigan
Band and Orchestra Day at the Flint Institute of Arts, and will consist of rehearsals,
sectionals, master classes and a "Careers in Music" workshop. Tickets are $12 for

MMEA Honors Composition Concert
Every year, the Michigan Music Educators Association hosts the Honors Composition
Concert, which showcases original music written by the state's finest youth composers.
The competition is open to all K-12 students, and this year, MMEA received a record-breaking
number of entries. MMEA selected 21 finalists, and they will perform their pieces
on Saturday, January 19 at 1 p.m. during the 2013 Michigan Music Conference in Grand

MAEIA Program to be Introduced at MMC
Join Michigan Youth Arts Executive Director Candy Smirnow and Michigan Assessment
Consortium Consultant Ana Luisa Cardona at the Michigan Music Conference for an
introduction on the Michigan Arts Education Instruction and Assessment (MAEIA) Program.
In response to the needs identified in the Arts Education in Michigan Survey, the
Michigan Department of Education has taken action to create an instructional blueprint,
a district audit tool and assessment prototypes that will guide the future development
of student assessments in the arts. Learn more on how to be a part of this process
and share your ideas at the Fine Arts Coordinator Meeting on Friday, January 18

YOUTH ARTS OPPORTUNITIES & GRANTS
Poetry Out Loud Deadline: Wednesday, Jan. 16
Starting at the classroom level, then moving on to school, regional, state and national
levels, Poetry Out Loud is the largest youth poetry recitation competition in the
United States. By Wednesday, January 16, each school must choose and submit one

Vans - Custom Culture Art Competition
Want to win $50,000 for your school's art program? On Wednesday, Jan. 2, Vans will
begin accepting entries for its 4th annual Custom Culture Art Competition, which
invites high school students to customize four pairs of blank Vans sneakers for
four different themes: Art, Music, Action Sports and Local Flavor. After public
voting on the Vans website and internal selection, five finalist schools will be
flown to New York City, and one will take home the grand prize, with the opportunity
to have their new designs produced and sold in Vans stores.

NEA Foundation: Learning & Leadership Grants
NEA Learning & Leadership Grants support public school teachers, public education
support professionals, and/or faculty and staff in public institutions of higher
education for one of two purposes:
* Grants to individuals fund participation in high-quality professional development
experiences such as summer institutes or action research
* Grants to groups fund collegial study, including study groups, action research,
lesson study, or mentoring experiences for faculty or staff new to an assignment.
Maximum award: $5,000. Eligibility: public school teachers grades K-12; public school
education support professionals; or faculty and staff at public higher education
institutions.
